Add to calendar 2019-06-01 23:59:59 Europe/Oslo Bulgarian Music Workshops People who hear Bulgarian music for the first time are often impressed and touched by its immense power, vitality and beauty. It has developed over centuries with impressions from the Ottoman empire, Macedonia, the Soviet union and many ancient, forgotten cultures. In the start of the summer, we will host two separate workshops, where the main focuses will be the vocal (choral) part of the folk music and the instrumental wedding music. Date: Sat 01.06.2019 and Sun 02.06.2019 Time: 10:00 – 17:00 Location: Aktivitetshuset K1 (Kolstadgata 1, 0652 Oslo) Price: 950kr per workshop for two day WORKSHOPS DETAILS Singing: Bulgarian singing has a unique style, whose fiery rhythms and unusual harmonies “melt” the soul, a vocal technique which gives power to the voice and voice to the heart. In this two-day, intensive workshop, led by Dessi Stefanova, participants will have a chance to plunge into this rich living tradition. They will be introduced to the basic techniques of voice production and special vocal effects (like shaking, hiccoughing, constant drone, sharp dissonance) used in Bulgarian singing. They will learn fun Bulgarian songs in two and three-part harmony (though discordance might be a better word). The songs will be taught by ear. No previous experience needed, SUITABLE FOR ALL who want to make a noise. Contents: - Overview on Bulgarian singing tradition and ethnographical areas - Basic ornamentation from different ethnographical areas - Learning songs by ear (with handouts) - Choir singing Instrumental: In this two-day, intensive workshop we will work with different aspects of the music, such as rhythm, improvisation, solo phrases and some tunes. We would like to invite musicians who feel they know their instrument well, but who want to get some new input, and learn some new ways to think about music. THE TEACHERS Dessislava Stefanova (Choral music): Dessi grew up singing the songs of her native Bulgaria. Already an experienced international performer by age 18, she went on to become a professional singer and assistant conductor with the renowned Philip Koutev Bulgarian National Folk Ensemble. Since 2000 she has been working in the UK performing in various art forms, recording film soundtracks (Troy, Elizabeth the Virgin Queen, Borat and many more) and delivering workshops. She is the founder and leader of the London Bulgarian Choir, Open Category Winner of the BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year competition in 2006. Thanks to her patience and dedication, this group of largely non-Bulgarian singers has become a performing tour de force, winning hearts and minds in the UK, and further afield, in Bulgaria’s concert halls. Dessi is Bulgarian Woman of the Year 2017. Bjørn-Petter Tøsse (Instrumental music): Bjørn-Petter Tøsse has studied a bachelor in Balkan folk music and jazz at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo and is currently taking a master study in Bulgarian wedding music from Thrace. On his record we find three gold medals from the Norwegian championship for accordion, one from Greece and an audience’s award from the Serbian Championship for accordion. Tøsse has played with different bands such as BabaYaga and Johnny Makam from France, Batkakollen and Oslo Balkan Band from Norway. He has also taken lessons with musicians like Ljubisa Pavkovic, Bata Kanda, Jovan Pavlovic, Toncho Minkov and Petar Ralchev. The three last have also held concerts together with Tøsse.
